A shameless plug
Yes this is a shameless plug so you'll just have to live with it
If you happen to find yourself in Melbourne or the Gold Coast, you could do much worse for a night out than Dracula's Cabaret Restaurant.
I knew I would enjoy the evening, such is my love of all things horror and horror related, but you need more than a good idea to be a success. A good idea poorly executed will turn into a bad experience and be remember forever as a terrible idea.
First of all, you need some very hot women (both on stage and as waitresses) in tight leather, slutty goth gear, and assorted other revealing costumes. It's a cheap ploy but it works.
Then for those you are going to put on stage you make sure they are serious and talented performers. I can hear you asking "How could you tell the people on stage were serious performers?"
Well when you are laughing solidly for an hour or so before realising that the actual two hour Fangs 'n' Fetish show hasn't started yet and all of this is just pre-show entertainment. Also, when their covers of Vertigo, Eagle Rock, Are You Gonna Be My Girl etc al are better than the original versions you hear on the radio, you know you have some good performers up there.
Plus you need to make sure you have a good show up there. And this was a damn fine show. Lots of different costumes, props, puppets, sets etc. Not all of it keeping with the horror theme but all of it was entertaining. Like the skit where this woman says you are what you eat but she doesn't remember eating a thin ditzy brunette of a drug addict who can't manage her finances. Quite entertaining she was, in her tight leather pants and low cut top. Almost enough to make me wish I was eating that thin ditzy brunette of a drug addict who couldn't manager her finances - but I digress. Ahem.
Oh and it is always a good thing to start the evening off with a video of some anime - in this case a montage of Berzerk and Vampire Hunter D. It really sets the mood well. And part way through the evening, playing a video message from the God of All Things Horror Themed and All Things That Rock, the one and only Alice Cooper, then blasting Feed My Frankenstein through the speakers, is also a very good thing and will make your entertainment rock even more.
Now we come to the food. There is a perception that theatre and cabaret restaurant food tends to suck, perhaps just being labelled "bland" at best. And for the most part, that perception is fully justified.
There used to be a theatre restaurant here all those years ago and menu never
seemed to change no matter how many years went by. And the quality of food never
changed either. It always sat somewhere between "shit" and "barf".
And as proof of what fucking morons I went to high school with, one of our senior balls was held at this theatre restaurant. And surprise surprise the food was horrible - even though they didn't have to worry about a show.
I am notoriously fussy when it comes to food and thus it doesn't take much to turn me off a place. And I can say without hesitation that the food at Dracula's was fantastic. It was made even better when you consider that the place was packed - some two, three, possibly four hundred people. There was a set menu with about 5 or 6 options to choose and everyone got their meals around the same time. I had the salmon and it was delicious. My friend had the lamb and it was literally melt in your mouth tender. The dessert (a chocolate coffin with cream and ice cream) was a lovely finishing to a great meal, and of course there were the cocktails....
Great food and great entertainment make for a great night out. And Dracula's delivers a great night out. Do yourself a favour - go to Dracula's
