As much as I like to make fun of political commercials, I've just seen a new Bush ad which is nothing short of
brilliant.
The commercial is put out by a group called Americans for a Secure Future, and it features an attractive soccer
mom (who voted for Gore in 2000) talking about how she's not
voting for Kerry. She talks about how terrorism and national
security are the most important issues for her. She briefly mentions
John Kerry's confusing and conflicting positions on the war in
Iraq. At one point, the ad shows the video clip of Kerry during
the primaries saying how the threat of international terrorism has been
"exaggerated," then the woman talks about the most recent terrorist
attacks around the world (and how horrified she was at what
happened in Russia). Finally, she says how shocked and
embarassed she was to read that the Kerry campaign belittled
the new Iraqi Prime Minister by calling him a "puppet," and how Kerry's
own
sister went to Australia to admonish them for helping America (shamelessly trying to drive a wedge between us
and one of our closest allies by telling them that helping us has put them at risk).
She concludes by saying that John Kerry is a risk America can't afford to take.
Have you seen the ad?
No, you haven't. That's because I just made the whole thing up!
But you've got to admit, it would be much more effective than the
stupid "Bush's plan for health care" ad they've got running on a
continuous loop in some states. I'm convinced that the Bush team
thinks that they've already won. Perhaps they're right, but
in case they're looking for an overwhelming victory, they need to take
a few more serious jabs at Kerry. That windsurfing ad is quite frankly
stupid. It allows the Democrats to say that Bush is joking about the
war in Iraq while our soldiers are dying (that's not what he's doing,
but he makes it easy for them to make that claim). As much as I
dislike the whole "Soccer mom staring at the screen with arms folded"
motif, an ad such as this one would be quite effective.
If
there are any 527s out there, you have my permission to take this and
run with it. Again, I don't pretend to be Larry Tate or anything.
But I do know what works and what doesn't. There's a
527 out there planning to run another Willy Horton
ad. Needless to say, that ad will do more harm than good. All that
needs to be done at this point is to show an attractive Soccer Mom
(Security Mom) talking about what a confusing, self-contradictory wimp
Kerry is (not to mention his traitorous bitch of a sister). And
Kerry's line about the threat of terrorism being "exaggerated" needs to
be out there so that people on the fence can finally see
what a piece of crap this man is.
How
many attractive soccer moms who voted for Gore in 2000 are now going to
vote for Bush? Thousands. And if any of them want to apply, please send
me an 8 x 10 photo (nudes are acceptable, as long as you don't have any
piercings, tattoos, or fake boobs). Gracias.
